Emergency Response: Coastguard & RNLI Rescue Swimmer Trapped Below Cliffs

Published On: 28 May 2024Last Updated: 28 May 2024By

On Saturday, 26th May, a swimmer encountered difficulties during an organised event in the sea below the Carlyon Bay Hotel.

The event safety swimmers quickly responded, rescuing the swimmer and bringing her to the closest point of land, which was situated below Crinnis Cliffs. However, the beach could only be accessed by sea, presenting a significant challenge for the rescue operation.

Coordinated Coastguard Response

At 1:18 pm, the Mevagissey Coastguard was paged to assist the St Austell Coastguard in the rescue efforts. Both coastguard teams collaborated to set up a cliff rescue operation. A cliff rescue technician from St Austell descended the cliff to reach the casualty and the event safety swimmers who were awaiting assistance on the beach.

Fowey RNLI’s Critical Role

The Fowey RNLI played a crucial role in the successful rescue. Using their small XP boat, they landed on the beach and transferred the swimmer to their All Weather Lifeboat. From there, she was safely transported to Fowey.

Safe and Sound

Upon arrival in Fowey, the swimmer was released into the care of her family, unharmed. The event safety team’s prompt decision to call 999 and seek help from the Coastguard was commendable and played a key role in the successful outcome of the rescue operation.

This incident underscores the importance of having well-prepared safety teams and the effectiveness of coordinated rescue efforts by the Coastguard and RNLI.
