Schoolchildren Choose ‘The Paddocks’ as Name for New Trispen Housing Development
Schoolchildren Choose ‘The Paddocks’ for New 80 Home Development
A village naming competition at St Erme with Trispen Community Primary School has led to Legacy Properties’ new housing development officially being called The Paddocks.
The Cornish housebuilder invited pupils to submit ideas for the name of the upcoming 80 home community planned for the village. Dozens of suggestions were put forward, with the final choice inspired by two entries from sisters at the school.
Joint Winners Inspire the Final Name
Joint first place was awarded to the two sisters for their entries, St Erme Paddocks and Eglos Erme Paddocks. Legacy Properties said both names captured the area’s rural setting and agricultural character, which helped shape the decision to settle on The Paddocks.
Second place went to Alfred Hunter for his suggestion, Boswiddle. Legacy said they were so impressed by the originality of his idea that they hope to use it for the new Plen an Gwari, the traditional Cornish playing place that will sit within the development’s public open space.
Several other pupil entries will also be proposed as street names to the local council as part of the development process.
Certificates, Vouchers and Plenty of Sweets
Legacy’s Head of Sales, Mark Docherty, visited the school to hand out certificates and vouchers to the winners, along with celebratory sweets for every pupil who took part.
Mark said:
“The children put forward some fantastic ideas and it was brilliant to see how much thought they put into naming the new community. The Paddocks feels absolutely right for Trispen, and it was important to us that the name came from the young people who live here. We’re delighted to recognise the winning entries, and we look forward to seeing the pupils’ suggestions become part of our marketing as we launch the development very soon.”
Assistant Headteacher Mr Cameron added:
“The competition has been extremely popular with pupils. The children thoroughly enjoyed being involved and took real pride in creating names that reflect their village and family heritage. We’re very grateful to Legacy Properties for engaging with the school and for giving the pupils such a positive and memorable experience.”
What The Paddocks Will Bring to Trispen
Legacy confirmed the development received full planning permission earlier in 2025. The scheme will introduce 80 new homes, ranging from one bedroom apartments to five bedroom family houses, with affordable homes offered for rent and shared ownership.
Other planned features include public open space, rewilding areas and a new cycle link connecting to local routes. Construction is due to start early next year, with the first homes expected to be available in summer or autumn 2026.
Legacy Properties is a family owned Cornish developer based in Newquay, with over 15 years of experience creating small collections of premium homes across the county.
