A Neighbourhood Watch Scheme has been launched in St Erth near Hayle with the goal of preventing crime and easing fears about it in the village.

Community Concerns Spark Action

The scheme was created following the annual parish meeting earlier this year, where villagers raised concerns about rising anti-social behaviour and the need to better integrate newcomers into the community.

Six new co-ordinators came together for the inaugural meeting on Friday, October 24th. The session was attended by Steph Good, Neighbourhood Watch Community Project Manager for Cornwall, PC Joe Magurean of Hayle Neighbourhood Policing Scheme, and Cornwall Councillor John Martin, who funded the group’s Starter Packs through the county’s Community Chest fund.

Strengthening Village Bonds

Covering most of the village centre, the St Erth Neighbourhood Watch aims to build stronger connections among residents to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour through community cooperation. The group will also share crime prevention advice, take part in community projects, and work closely with the parish council, St Erth Residents’ Association and other local organisations.

“We Want to Keep St Erth a Lovely Place to Live”

Francesca Peterson, co-ordinator for St Erth’s Lanuthnoe Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, who organised the set-up meeting, said:

“St Erth is a lovely village to live in – and we want to keep it that way for everyone. Looking out for the people who live here, their homes, and the facilities we have here is what has brought us together.

“The enthusiasm from the new co-ordinators combined with the strength of support from the police, the councils at local and county level, as well the county organiser for NHW, bodes well for the future.

“We already have plans to get ourselves known in the village through a leaflet campaign and a community event. In the meantime, residents can find out more – including how to contact their local co-ordinator and join their scheme – through ourwatch.org.uk.”

The St Erth Neighbourhood Watch is now active and encouraging residents to get involved in keeping their village safe and connected.
