St. Erth Parish Council Seeks Community Involvement for River Hayle Conservation

Published On: 29 January 2024Last Updated: 29 January 2024By

St. Erth Parish Council has announced an initiative to form a Community Working Group dedicated to the conservation and management of a section of the River Hayle. This effort is part of the broader Hayle River Vision Plan and focuses on a 0.9km stretch of the river, extending from St Erth bridge to the Green Lane gauging station.

The targeted section of the river, known for its slow flow and shallow gradient, winds north through St Erth and is accompanied by a popular permissive footpath along its left bank. However, it faces several challenges, primarily bank erosion caused by various factors. Addressing these issues has become a priority for the council, especially as this part of the river runs adjacent to land owned by the St Erth Playing Fields Association, for which the Parish Council acts as the Sole Trustee.

In an effort to tackle these environmental concerns, St. Erth Parish Council is reaching out to the community for engagement and support. The council emphasises the importance of collaborative efforts, involving not only local residents but also other landowners and the Environment Agency. The Working Group aims to explore solutions to the river’s erosion issues and seek potential funding to implement these measures.

Residents interested in participating in this conservation endeavour are encouraged to join the Riverbank Community Working Group. Their involvement will be crucial in preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of this important stretch of the River Hayle. The initiative reflects a community-driven approach to environmental stewardship, aiming to ensure the health and sustainability of local natural resources.

If you would like to be part of this group, please contact the Clerk at clerk@sterth-pc.gov.uk or ring and leave a message on 01736 757575.
