£500 Boost for Cake Delivery Group That Supports St Ives’ Isolated Residents
A community project that began during the COVID pandemic to bring cakes and companionship to isolated residents in Carbis Bay has received a £500 donation from Devon and Cornwall Police. The St Ives Community Land Trust (SICLT) has been awarded the funds, which will help the Carbis Bay Bakers continue their much-loved work in the area.
Pandemic Project That Lives On
The Carbis Bay Bakers originally started as a way to support people who were isolated or vulnerable during lockdown. The volunteers, around 40 bakers in total, delivered homemade cakes and offered a friendly face to those in need. Although the project was born out of the pandemic, it has proved so successful that it has carried on for the past four years.
The bakers deliver more than 60 pieces of cake every fortnight in and around St Ives, with doorstep chats forming an important part of the initiative to help people stay connected. The group aims to keep people from feeling lonely and isolated, providing more than just a sweet treat.
Funding from Crime Proceeds
The £500 donation comes from the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), which redirects money and assets confiscated from convicted criminals to support community projects. In this case, the money will go towards buying baking equipment, ingredients, and covering delivery costs to ensure the Carbis Bay Bakers can continue their work.
