St. Ives Museum, a beacon of culture and history, proudly celebrates its centenary with the launch of an exciting Heritage Trail.

This engaging new trail was officially opened on April 10, 2024, by none other than St. Ives’ own Mayor, Johnnie Wells.

A Century of History

Founded in 1924, St. Ives Museum has been a cornerstone of the community, dedicated to preserving the rich history of the town. The museum’s journey began humbly in a cellar beneath a sail loft on Pudding Bag Lane and has grown over the decades to its present location at Wheal Dream, with stunning views of Bamaluz Beach.

The Trail Launch

During the trail’s launch, Mayor Johnnie was enthusiastic about the museum’s contributions to local heritage, stating, “It is great to see the museum doing so well and bringing the history of St Ives alive.” He encouraged all to visit the museum to explore the Heritage Trail and discover the pivotal locations around the town that have shaped the museum’s story.

Preserving the Past

Peter Garratt, the Assistant Curator at the museum, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments. At the launch, he remarked, “St. Ives Museum has come a long way since it was founded back in 1924 but we shall continue to ‘gather the fragments that are left that nothing be lost,” highlighting the museum’s ongoing commitment to collecting and preserving St. Ives’ historical artefacts. This mission preserves critical memories of the town’s past, particularly from traditional industries like fishing, farming, and mining, which have radically transformed over the years.

Visit and Learn

The Heritage Trail offers both locals and tourists alike a unique glimpse into the historical fabric of St. Ives, made possible by the tireless efforts of the St. Ives Old Cornwall Society’s founding members. Their initial collections, which saved many artefacts from oblivion, laid the groundwork for what visitors can now experience.
