St Ives Mariners Memorial to Honour Town’s Rich Maritime Heritage
St Ives, renowned for its thriving artists’ colony, is set to commemorate its often-overlooked maritime history with the St Ives Mariners Memorial.
This project, led by local sculptor Tom Leaper, aims to celebrate the town’s legacy of mariners, fishermen, and boat builders, whose work has long inspired the area’s artists.
Miniature Sculptures for Sale
A limited series of miniature versions of the memorial, crafted by Tom Leaper, are now available for purchase at Penwith Gallery. Priced at £1400 each, the proceeds from these sales will fund the casting, production, and installation of the main sculpture at St Ives Harbour. Each buyer will have their name inscribed on the side of the monument, creating a unique opportunity to be part of this historic project.
A Lasting Tribute to Fishermen
The life-size bronze sculpture will depict two pilchard fishermen “Tucking the Net,” a scene that captures the essence of St Ives’ maritime past. This memorial aims to create a lasting tribute to the men and women who contributed to the town’s development through their seafaring work.
Supporting Local Heritage
The project has garnered excitement and support within the community, with Penwith Gallery expressing their thrill in supporting this endeavour. The memorial is set to become a significant landmark in St Ives, bridging the town’s rich artistic and maritime histories.
