St Ives to Start Terrace Junction Re-design on 11th November
Work to re-design the Terrace Junction in St Ives is set to begin on Monday, 11th November, marking a significant step in the St Ives Town Deal Low Carbon Transport Strategy. The project aims to enhance pedestrian space and ease access while discouraging visitor traffic from entering the town centre.
Enhancing Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Flow
Cormac, the company responsible for the construction, will widen the existing footway at the northwest corner of the junction near the St Ives Harbour Hotel. The improvements also include updating signs and road markings to guide drivers towards Trenwith car park instead of the town centre. During the construction period, three-way traffic lights will be in place to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists.
Cormac project manager Tom James noted, “This is a busy junction and we recognise that the works will inevitably cause some temporary disruption to motorists. Our aim is to keep the traffic flowing as well as possible at all times during the construction, however we also need to ensure the safety of the teams working on site.”
Road Closures for Paving Works
Following the footway expansion, the junction will be resurfaced with decorative paving. This phase will involve road closures on the Albert Road approach and alongside the Harbour Hotel during the nights of 9–13 December. Work will finish by 11 pm each night to minimise disruption for residents. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by 13 December.
Andrew Baragwanath, Chair of the St Ives Town Deal Board, expressed his support, saying, “It is great to see work begin on improving this key junction in St Ives. I am aware that some residents and businesses are concerned about the impact of the works and can reassure them that everyone will be working together to minimise any disruption and ensure that the scheme is completed as quickly as possible.”
Community Consultations and Future Plans
Feedback from public consultations in October was incorporated into the final design. Cornwall Councillor Andrew Mitchell highlighted the importance of reducing unnecessary town traffic, stating, “Discouraging traffic going through town which doesn’t need to be there has to be the goal and something I think all pedestrians and residents want to see.”
Louis Gardner, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy at Cornwall Council, added, “It’s good to see Town Deal investment continuing to take shape in St Ives. None of us like roadworks, but it’s a good time of year to get them out the way and they are essential to our work to reduce visitor traffic in the town centre and improve pedestrian access.”
Monitoring Traffic and Managing Flow
The project is part of a broader plan that includes the installation of smart traffic cameras, known as Vivacity cameras, which will be deployed in up to 12 locations across St Ives in the coming months. These cameras will provide real-time data on vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist activity, allowing the project team to assess the benefits of the changes and consider any additional measures needed.
New Variable Message Signs are also being introduced on the A30 and around St Ives. These signs, set to be operational by the end of the year, will help manage traffic flow by advising drivers on the most efficient routes and available parking, including encouraging the use of the St Erth Park & Ride.
Upcoming Works in 2025
Further work under the Low Carbon Transport Strategy includes improvements to the junction at Zennor (Consols between the B3311 and B3306), which are scheduled to begin in January 2025.
