What’s Really Going On With Teen Body Image and Relationships in St Ives? Two Free Workshops Aim to Help
Free sessions for ages 11 to 14 at the Edward Hain Centre this May
Two free workshops focused on supporting the health and wellbeing of young people are being held at the Edward Hain Centre in St Ives this month.
Aimed at pre-teens and teenagers aged 11 to 14, the sessions are run by Yonkers, the youth group ‘arm’ of St Ives Town Council, and take place on Thursday 8th May and Thursday 15th May from 3.30pm to 5pm. Refreshments are included and there is no charge to attend.
Body Image – tackled in the first session
The first session, held on 8th May, focused on Body Image. It addressed the pressures young people face from social media and online culture, where idealised body types can impact confidence and self-esteem.
Healthy Relationships – next session on 15th May
The second workshop is happening on 15th May and will explore Healthy Relationships. This is a subject many teenagers find difficult to understand, especially in a world that often blurs boundaries.
‘Teenage can be an emotional minefield’
Trustee of the Edward Hain Centre, Kit Grindstaff, said:
“Teenage can be an emotional minefield, and these are timeless issues which every generation faces. I remember struggling a lot with the exact same things. So I’m thrilled that we’re able to offer space for such important work at the EHC.”
Kit also highlighted that the rise in online engagement and the general pressures of today’s world can make it harder for young people to keep their boundaries strong and safe.
Run by local youth officers
The workshops are led by St Ives Town Council youth officers Laura Peach and Rosana Cox, who are part of the team behind Yonkers (which means ‘Young People’ in Cornish).
“The resources we use are age-based, and from websites such as the NHS and The Mix,” said Laura, also known as Peach. “The workshops are ideal for anyone who would benefit from discussions and activities based on the topics.”
How to sign up
Space is limited, so booking is needed. To reserve a place, text 07508 821901 (messages will be picked up by either Laura or Rosana), or email:
