Yacht Rescued Off St Ives After Taking on Water and Engine Failure
Lifeboats from St Ives and Penlee respond to Mayday
A yacht with three people onboard was rescued yesterday, Monday 30th June, after putting out a mayday distress call west of St Ives.
The 40ft yacht had started taking on water and suffered engine failure, prompting an immediate launch from the St Ives Lifeboat under the command of Coxswain Robert Cocking.
Once on scene, two crew members were placed onboard the yacht. They quickly managed to stem the ingress of sea water and, shortly after, restart the engine. With the situation under control but still uncertain, Robert decided the safest option was to escort the vessel towards Newlyn Harbour.
Penlee Lifeboat joins the rescue
At 13:40, Penlee’s all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched under the command of Patch Harvey, accompanied by six volunteer crew. By 14:30, the lifeboat had arrived on scene around one mile northwest of the Runnelstone Buoy.
Two crew members from Penlee were transferred to the yacht, taking over escort duties. The St Ives crew picked up their lifeboat crew and returned to station.
Engine fails again near Mousehole
Not long after, the yacht suffered further engine troubles off Mousehole Island. The Penlee crew passed over a tow rope and towed the yacht to a berth in Newlyn Harbour, arriving at 17:15.
A good job done by both crews.
