Police Engagement Van Deployed in St Ives to Meet Local Communities
A police engagement van is being used to bring neighbourhood policing closer to communities in St Ives, with officers describing it as a simple and accessible way for people to speak directly with the police.
The van, operated by the neighbourhood police team from Devon & Cornwall Police, acts as a mobile police station. It allows members of the public to report crime, give statements, receive crime prevention advice or simply meet their local officers without needing to visit a police enquiry office.
First outings across St Ives and Hayle
The engagement van was deployed for the first time last week outside a local school in St Ives, on the Wharf, and at Hayle retail park. Police say feedback from the community was positive, with one resident commenting on how accessible the service was.
What the police say
Police Community Support Officer Terry Webb said:
“Whilst we carry out our regular foot patrols in neighbourhoods, this van is another way for us to engage with our communities.
“It acts as welcoming base for people to come up and speak with us; it’s a valuable opportunity to chat directly with the public, offer advice and listen to any concerns people have without the need for them to pick up the phone or visit a police enquiry office.
“The value of having an in-person conversation with someone cannot be underestimated.”
Terry added:
“Being visible like this goes a long way in showing people that our officers are approachable, that we want to hear from you, and that we want to do the best for our communities.”
More visits planned for 2026
The neighbourhood police team has confirmed the van will continue to be deployed at various locations throughout 2026. Upcoming dates will be shared via the local Facebook page for Hayle and St Ives policing, as well as on the Devon & Cornwall Police website.
Residents can also sign up to Devon & Cornwall Community Messaging to receive updates directly from police teams in their area.
Anyone with information about illegal activity is encouraged to report it to Devon & Cornwall Police via their website or by calling 101. In an emergency, call 999. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555111 or through their website.
