Chapel Fundraiser Raises £1,500 for Lizard Community Charity Despite Storm Goretti

A sellout fundraiser in Lizard village has raised more than £1,500 for a local charity, despite the area still dealing with the effects of Storm Goretti.

The concert took place on Thursday 15th January and featured much loved Cornish group The Oggymen, performing to a full house just days after the storm hit the village on 8th January. At the time of the event, Lizard had experienced days without power or water and was still without phone or internet services.

Fundraising for the Old Methodist Chapel

The event was held as an exclusive fundraiser for Lizard CATCH, which is working to raise funds to purchase the Old Methodist Chapel. The building closed in 2025 after more than 150 years at the heart of the community.

The concert was the first performance of 2026 for The Oggymen and was hosted at Tregullas Farm, with the barn generously lent for the evening by award winning local farmers Rona and Neville Amiss.

Community Support Praised

Lifelong Lizard resident and charity spokesperson Paul Taylor said:

‘It was a fantastic event, made possible by the generosity of The Oggymen, local business Ann’s Pasties who donated fifty of their finest pasties and the Blue Anchor Inn who gave us a barrel of Spingo at cost price. It started our fundraising efforts for 2026 and lifted the spirits of everyone who attended – just what was needed after the challenges the village were facing due to Storm Goretti.’

Call to Support the Cause

Will Keating of The Oggymen added:

‘It was a fantastic way to start 2026, I have always had a great love for this chapel building, its history and acoustics, the band was delighted to help and I urge people to support this very valid Cornish cause.’

The charity is now stepping up its fundraising after the storm caused some damage to the listed chapel building, leaving it vulnerable to deterioration. The long term aim is to restore the chapel and use it for concerts, art exhibitions, Cornish heritage events and regular community gatherings.

Donations can be made via the charity’s crowdfunder at donate.lizardchapel.org.
