Engine Failure Leaves Boat Stranded: The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Crew to the Rescue
In a swift and efficient operation, The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station’s crew sprang into action on Thursday, 18th July, following a distress call from the Falmouth Coastguard.
Emergency Call
The alert was received at 5.34pm, prompting the lifeboat to launch just ten minutes later at 5.44pm. Under the command of Second Coxswain Darren Thirlaway, the crew of the RNLB Rose quickly navigated to assist a 3.5m RIB that had experienced engine failure approximately half a mile offshore between Kynance Cove and Mullion Cove.
Quick Response
The distressed vessel, carrying three people, was located near Soapy Cove at 5.55pm. After a rapid assessment, it was confirmed that none of the individuals on board required medical attention. With the boat unable to propel itself, the decision was made to tow it to Mullion Cove.
Tow Operation
A tow line was successfully attached to the stricken vessel, and it was guided towards Mullion Harbour. As the RNLB Rose approached the harbour entrance, a local boat operated by a member of The Lizard Lifeboat shore crew took over the tow, bringing the vessel safely into Mullion Harbour. This manoeuvre spared the RNLB Rose from deploying its smaller Y-boat to enter the harbour fully.
Safe Return
The lifeboat returned to its station, arriving at 6.58pm. By 7.08pm, the RNLB Rose was rehoused and ready for any further emergencies.
The swift and coordinated efforts of The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat crew ensured the safety of all aboard the disabled vessel, highlighting the vital role they play in maritime rescue operations.
