Stranded Yacht Rescued by Lizard Lifeboat Crew in Evening Operation
The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station responded to its third emergency call in five days at 6:42pm on Friday, 19th July.
At 6:54pm, the lifeboat, RNLB Rose, launched to assist a 26ft Sunseeker motor yacht that experienced complete engine failure six nautical miles east of Lizard Point. The vessel, carrying three people, was eventually located 12 nautical miles east of Lizard Point at 7:28pm.
Assessing the Situation
Upon arrival, the crew conducted a risk assessment and determined that none of the yacht’s occupants required medical assistance. However, the yacht was without propulsion and needed help reaching the nearest port, Falmouth. Under the command of Second Coxswain Darren Thirlaway, the crew decided to attach a towline to the stranded vessel.
Successful Tow to Safety
The RNLB Rose successfully towed the motor yacht, arriving in Falmouth at 9:27pm. The yacht was secured to a safe mooring, ensuring the safety of its passengers and the vessel.
Returning to Base
After completing the mission, the RNLB Rose returned to Kilcobben Cove, arriving at the slipway at 10:22pm. The lifeboat was then rehoused, refuelled, and made ready for future service by 11:00pm.
The prompt response and efficient operation by the Lizard Lifeboat crew ensured the safety of the yacht and its passengers, showcasing the crucial role of RNLI services in maritime safety.
