Torpoint Ferry Partners with Action for Children to Support Young People
A new summer partnership between the Torpoint Ferry and Action for Children is aiming to build stronger ties with young people crossing the River Tamar.
Summer Presence on Board
Since 22nd July, two detached youth workers from Action for Children — Rachael Ellis and Natalie Griffin — have been travelling on the Torpoint Ferry every Tuesday between 5pm and 7pm. Their presence is part of a new effort to promote positive relationships and offer support to young people using the service during the busy summer period.
Ferry Manager Kellyann Newcombe said,
“We are delighted to be working with Action for Children on this project which is designed to strengthen our connection with the local youth community and promote safe, enriching transit experiences.”
She added,
“Rachael and Natalie’s presence will not only provide familiarity and reassurance to families and young people travelling in and around Torpoint, but also aligns with the Ferry’s broader role as a vital community lifeline playing a part in the Tamar 2050 vision by fostering inclusivity and public engagement.”
More Than Just a Ferry Ride
The Tuesday evening presence is about more than simply being on board. Rachael and Natalie are also listening to the needs of young passengers, signposting them to other projects and services, and working in partnership with others to help prevent incidents of anti-social behaviour.
Rachael Ellis said,
“We know that understanding who is coming from where, and the issues young people are facing, helps us develop appropriate interventions. Positive projects such as this can play an important part in reducing ASB by engaging directly with young people when and where they need it most.”
The summer programme continues every Tuesday evening and is part of a wider focus on creating safer, more inclusive community connections through the ferry service.
