Cornwall Named World’s Top Destination for Slow Travel

Published On: 7 July 2025Last Updated: 7 July 2025By

Cornwall has officially been named the world’s number one destination for slow travel, topping a global list that includes popular holiday spots like the Algarve, Lanzarote and Dubrovnik.

The recognition comes from the new Slow Travel Index, published by Sainsbury’s Bank, which assessed 30 of the most sought-after destinations around the world. Cornwall came out on top thanks to its combination of natural beauty, affordability, quality accommodation and relaxing experiences.

What Is Slow Travel?

The slow travel movement is gaining momentum, with UK searches for the term rising by 5.4% in the past year. Travellers are increasingly favouring meaningful, restorative trips that encourage deeper connections with local culture and the natural world, instead of tightly packed itineraries.

Wellness expert Eloise Skinner explains:

“Slow travel helps us to truly experience a place rather than rushing through it, allowing for a more restful and enriching journey. In a world where burnout is on the rise, this mindful approach to travel could be a game-changer for physical and emotional well-being.”

Eloise also says that this way of travelling can improve sleep, reduce stress and help visitors feel more grounded.

Why Cornwall Took the Top Spot

Stuart Briant, Head of Travel Money at Sainsbury’s Bank, said Cornwall’s “stunning coastline, hidden gems and rich history” helped the region clinch first place.

“It offers visitors ample opportunities for relaxation and exploration at their own pace,” he added.
“It’s great to have a location so close to home recognised as a world-leading destination for slow travel. We encourage visitors to embrace the slower pace, and discover the hidden gems that make this region so special.”

The top five slow travel destinations in the Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Index are:

  1. Cornwall, UK

  2. The Algarve, Portugal

  3. Provence, France

  4. Lanzarote, Spain

  5. Oslo, Norway
