The A30 route between Boxheater and Chiverton is set for a temporary closure this weekend as part of an ongoing £330 million upgrade. Motorists are advised to prepare for diversions and potential delays.

Weekend Road Closure Details

National Highways has announced a crucial segment of the A30, stretching from Boxheater to Chiverton, will be closed from the evening of Friday, 12 April at 8 PM until the early hours of Monday, 15 April at 6 AM. The closure, which will affect all traffic including HGVs and high-sided vehicles, is necessary to facilitate extensive surfacing works, the installation of new signage bases, and other critical infrastructure enhancements.

Planned Diversions

During the closure period, a designated diversion route will be in place via the B3285 and A3075 to accommodate all displaced traffic. Officials ensure that access across the B3284 at Chybucca north and south will be maintained throughout the weekend to minimise disruption to local residents and through-travellers.

Strategic Importance of the A30 Upgrade

The upgrade of the A30 from Chiverton Cross to Carland Cross is a significant part of the Government’s Roads Investment Strategy, reflecting the road’s strategic importance within the national transport network. This project, which began in March 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2024, is supported by an £8 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund, with additional funding during the construction phase.

Impact on Local and Travelling Public

National Highways has committed to making every effort to reduce the impact on the local community and the general travelling public. However, they advise motorists to plan their journeys in advance during this period and allow for extra travel time. The agency also notes that while they aim to adhere to the scheduled work programme, changes may occur due to unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions.

Summary

Motorists planning to use the A30 between Chiverton and Carland Cross over the coming weekend should expect significant disruptions and plan their journeys accordingly. The extensive road works are set to improve traffic flow and safety on this essential part of the Strategic Road Network, promising long-term benefits despite short-term inconveniences.

As the project progresses, further information, including future closure dates and diversion routes, will be made available through the National Highways website, ensuring the public remains informed and prepared for upcoming travel adjustments.
