The Hidden Toll of Roadside Litter on Wildlife

Published On: 19 February 2024Last Updated: 19 February 2024By

National Highways: South-West has shared concerning data on the detrimental effects of roadside litter on wildlife, shedding light on a pressing environmental issue that demands immediate public attention and action. Each year, discarded rubbish, including food waste and packaging, is responsible for the deaths of up to three million animals in the South-West region alone. This staggering figure includes hedgehogs, rabbits, squirrels, and other vulnerable wildlife, highlighting a dire need for change in how we dispose of our waste.

The cause of this alarming mortality rate among wildlife is twofold. Firstly, litter attracts animals to the dangers lurking beside fast-moving traffic, significantly increasing their risk of being struck by vehicles. Furthermore, the consumption of or entanglement in discarded items poses serious health risks. Animals are often choked, poisoned, or injured by the rubbish that is thoughtlessly thrown away. From plastic bottles and metal cans to leftover food, the dangers are varied and lethal.

National Highways: South-West emphasises that littering impacts more than just the aesthetic appeal of our roadways. It poses a significant threat to wildlife, endangers the individuals tasked with its cleanup, and diverts resources that could otherwise be utilised to enhance the road network.

The organisation urges the public to take responsibility for their waste, advising everyone to use bins or wait until they can dispose of their rubbish at home properly. This simple act of consideration can significantly reduce the risk to wildlife and help preserve the natural beauty of our environment.

Moreover, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) reports receiving an average of 10 calls daily concerning animals affected by litter, a number that surges during the warmer months. This statistic is just the tip of the iceberg, as many injured animals are never found or reported.

This compelling call to action serves as a reminder of the profound impact our daily choices can have on the world around us. By reevaluating how we manage our waste, especially when on the move, we can play a crucial role in safeguarding the lives of countless animals and contributing to the well-being of our environment.
