Toll Hike Approved: When Will Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Prices Go Up?
Government greenlights application – £3 cash toll for cars incoming
Drivers crossing the Tamar Bridge and using the Torpoint Ferry will soon be paying more, after the Government officially approved the application to revise tolls.
Formal process underway
The application, submitted last year by the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee, aimed to secure the long-term future of both crossings. It followed a Public Local Inquiry held in October 2024, led by an independent Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State for Transport.
The Department for Transport has confirmed the Secretary of State accepted that the proposed increases are “necessary and proportionate” after reviewing the application, evidence from the inquiry, and public feedback. A copy of the Inspector’s report is available to view on the Tamar Crossings website.
New tolls confirmed
Once the legal process is completed and a Statutory Instrument is formally laid in Parliament, tolls will increase to the following:
-
Cash toll for cars: £3.00
-
TamarTag discount: 50% off the full toll
-
Tag toll for cars and vans: £1.50
-
Other vehicle tolls: Increasing broadly pro rata
The Tamar Crossings team has confirmed that the legal process can take a few weeks, and they are awaiting confirmation on when the new tolls will come into effect.
Looking ahead
Work is already underway to develop a policy aimed at improving benefits for local people. This includes plans to:
-
Continue pursuing the ability to apply RPI (Retail Price Index) to tolls
-
Smooth out spikes in future toll changes
-
Seek cheaper tolls for local users
A Tamar Crossings spokesperson confirmed:
“The Department of Transport will now complete the legal process necessary for a formal Toll Order. This process can take a little time. When completed, we will seek to increase rates as soon as practical after we have full authority to do so.”
Further updates will be provided once the timeline for the new tolls is confirmed.
