Construction of New Sports Hub Building Underway at Boscawen Park
Work is now underway on the construction of a new multi-use Community Sports Hub building at Boscawen Park, marking a major step forward in plans to enhance sports and leisure facilities in Truro.
The £5.2 million project, led by Truro City Council and funded by Truro Town Deal with support from Cornwall Council, officially began this week after Truro Mayor Councillor Chris Wells cut the first turf on the site.
A Landmark Moment for Truro
The turf cutting ceremony was attended by The Mayoress, Nicola Carveth; Truro Town Deal Board Chair Alan Stanhope; David Rodda MBE, Clerk of Truro City Council; members of the Boscawen Park Sports Hub project team including Ward Williams Associates, Kast Architects and Mei Loci Landscape Designs; the contractor Fox Construction; officers from Truro City Council; and the Town Deal Programme Management Office.
Chris said: “It was an honour to cut the turf for such an important project. This is bringing to fruition a long-term ambition of Truro City Council to improve the community and sports facilities at Boscawen Park and we are thankful that the Truro Town Deal funding has made this possible.”
What the New Building Will Offer
The new hub is expected to take around nine months to complete. Once finished, it will feature flexible indoor spaces suitable for sports use as well as activities such as conferences, community and family events, workshops, training, and arts and crafts groups.
Alan said: “The Community Sports Hub at Boscawen Park is a sound investment in Truro’s future, adding high-quality sports and leisure facilities that will benefit residents of all ages. It’s also excellent to see a local contractor leading the build, ensuring that this project not only strengthens our community facilities but also supports local businesses.”
Kevin Bate, Director of Fox Construction Solutions, added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Truro City Council on this long awaited project. We are committed to delivering quality and excellence to ensure the success of this project, supporting local SME’s along the way.”
Wider Park Improvements
The hub forms part of broader works at Boscawen Park. These include an extended and improved pétanque pitch, resurfacing of the riverside walk, and the installation of new riverside fencing.
Last month, improvement works also began on the grass playing pitches, which will remain closed while drainage and reseeding are carried out. Competitive sports are expected to return to the pitches in April 2026 once the new grass surface has been established.
Despite the works, the children’s play area, formal gardens, tennis courts, café and the existing boules/pétanque pitch will remain open to the public for the majority of the construction period.
Backed by Town Deal Funding
This development is one of a series of projects funded through the Truro Town Deal. Truro Town Deal Board, in partnership with Cornwall Council, successfully secured £23.6 million to support regeneration projects across the city aimed at boosting the local economy. Cornwall Council is the lead authority for Cornwall Town Deals, supporting governance and administrating the fund.
