Game-Changer for Truro? Boscawen Park Sports Hub Gets the Green Light

Published On: 13 February 2025Last Updated: 13 February 2025By

Truro’s Boscawen Park is set for a major transformation after plans for a new Sports Hub were approved by Cornwall Council. The project, led by the City Council and funded by Truro Town Deal, will introduce modern indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities to the popular park.

What’s Coming to Boscawen Park?

The Sports Hub will feature a new multi-use building designed to accommodate a range of indoor sports, including badminton, table tennis, and basketball. The building will also offer flexible spaces for conferences, community and family events, workshops, training sessions, and arts and crafts groups.

Outdoors, an extended and improved pétanque pitch will be created, and the existing grass playing surfaces will be upgraded to allow longer periods of use throughout the year.

A Milestone for Truro’s Future

The planning application, submitted in November 2024 following public consultation, marks a significant milestone in the project’s development. Truro Mayor Carol Swain welcomed the approval, saying:

“This is a major step forward for our Sports Hub project. This fantastic project will provide new and improved sports and leisure facilities for local residents and visitors alike, and I am looking forward to seeing the new Boscawen Sports Hub opening its doors to the local community in 2026.”

The project forms part of Truro’s wider regeneration efforts under the £23.6 million Town Deal. Alan Stanhope, Chair of Truro Town Deal Board, highlighted the long-term impact of the scheme:

“This is a very significant milestone for the Truro Town Deal portfolio of projects. Boscawen Park Sports Hub will leave a lasting legacy of the Town Deal funding in our city, and will be enjoyed by people from all areas of our community for many years to come.”

Cornwall Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy Louis Gardner also praised the approval, saying:

“It’s great to see another Town Deal investment moving forward, particularly one which will benefit so many people. This hub is a real step towards our goal of creating a Cornwall where people can start well, live well and age well.”

What Happens Next?

With formal planning permission granted, the next steps include finalising the detailed designs and appointing a contractor. Construction is expected to begin by mid-2025, with the new facilities set to open in 2026.

The Truro Town Deal Board, working in partnership with Cornwall Council, continues to oversee the Town Deal funding, supporting projects aimed at boosting the city’s economy and improving community spaces.
