Truro Makes the Switch: Electric Van to Cut Carbon and Costs

Published On: 5 November 2025Last Updated: 5 November 2025By

Truro City Council has swapped out a diesel van for a new electric vehicle, marking another step in its drive towards sustainability and efficiency.

Cleaner, Greener Transport for Truro

The new electric vehicle (EV), introduced to the Council’s Facilities Team, is expected to reduce operational carbon emissions by around 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The move is also set to lower both fuel and maintenance costs, supporting the Council’s goal of delivering better value for money.

The investment forms part of Truro City Council’s ongoing efforts to cut emissions and improve service efficiency across its operations. With Truro’s layout and traffic contributing to local air-quality challenges, the shift to electric transport is seen as a practical way to help tackle the issue.

Easier Contact for Residents

As part of the update, a new QR code and dedicated email contact have been launched to make it easier for residents and businesses to reach the Facilities Team. The system will allow the public to report facilities or maintenance issues directly, helping the Council respond more quickly and efficiently.

“A Focus on Sustainability and Value for Money”

Mark Wright, Facilities, Estates & Compliance Manager at Truro City Council, said:

“This investment reflects our continuing focus on sustainability and value for money in how we operate. By replacing a diesel van with an electric vehicle, we’ll reduce our operational carbon footprint by around 1.5 tonnes each year while cutting running and maintenance costs. We know residents value actions that improve air quality and carbon reduction, and this investment demonstrates how we’re working towards both.”

Setting an Example for Others

Mayor of Truro, Councillor Chris Wells, added:

“It’s encouraging to see practical investments like this that deliver both environmental and financial benefits for the city. Residents consistently tell us they want to see responsible use of public funds and visible progress towards a more sustainable Truro. Switching to an electric vehicle shows that we can achieve both – reducing running costs and emissions while setting an example for others to follow.”
