Truro Rangers Gain New Powers to Combat Anti-Social Behaviour

Published On: 12 July 2024Last Updated: 12 July 2024By

The Truro Rangers, funded by Truro BID, have recently been granted Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) powers, enhancing their ability to tackle anti-social behaviour in the city centre.

New CSAS Powers

The award of CSAS powers was marked by a meeting between the Truro Rangers, Truro BID Manager Alun Jones, members of the CSAS team from Devon and Cornwall Police, Helen Toms from Cornwall Council’s Community Safety Team, Truro’s Anti-Social Behaviour Officer, and Councillor Chris Wells. With these new powers, the Truro Rangers can now stop individuals and take down names and addresses of those involved in anti-social behaviour incidents, which can then be handed over to the police.

Enhanced Patrols

Truro BID has been providing a security resource in the city centre since April 2023, with the current provider working alongside them since October 2023. The Truro Rangers, distinguishable by their red utility vests, provide 56 hours of foot patrols weekly. They act as a visible deterrent against low-level crime and violence against shop workers, wearing body-worn video cameras to gather evidence for potential prosecutions.

Collaboration and Training

Three of the four Truro Rangers who regularly patrol the streets have undergone CSAS training. The team has been working effectively alongside Truro’s businesses and the city’s Anti-Social Behaviour Officer, Stephen Lennon. Truro BID, along with Truro City Council and Cornwall Council, also funds the Truro Anti-Social Behaviour Officer’s post.

The introduction of CSAS powers is expected to significantly bolster the efforts of the Truro Rangers in maintaining safety and order in the city centre.
