Truro Undergoes Major Gas Pipe Upgrade to Ensure Continuous Gas Supply

Published On: 5 March 2024Last Updated: 5 March 2024By

Truro is currently witnessing a significant upgrade to its gas pipeline infrastructure, thanks to the efforts of Wales & West Utilities.

The work taking place on St Clements Street, aims to ensure a steady and reliable gas supply to both residential and commercial premises within the region.

The upgrade work, which commenced recently, is part of Wales & West Utilities’ commitment to maintaining essential energy infrastructure. This project is critical for heating homes and powering businesses throughout Truro, highlighting the utility company’s dedication to community service and infrastructure improvement.

Wales & West Utilities has set an ambitious target to complete the upgrade by June, assuming there are no significant engineering challenges. The project has been carefully planned in collaboration with Cornwall Council to minimise disruption to the daily lives of Truro’s residents and visitors.

To ensure the safety of the local community, road users, and the workers on-site, comprehensive traffic management measures will be implemented. These measures include the installation of four-way traffic lights at a crucial junction from 4th March to 15th March and the introduction of two-way rolling traffic lights on St Clement Street. Additional adjustments, such as the placement of an extra traffic light on Campfield Hill between 8th April and 19th April and three-way lights at another junction from 25th May to 12th June, will further manage the flow of vehicles.

Work Schedule

  • Between 4 March and 15 March, four-way traffic lights will be in place at the junction of St Clement Street, New Bridge Street, St Austell Street and Mitchell Hill, leading into two-way rolling traffic lights on St Clement Street.
  • Between 8 April and 19 April, an additional traffic light will be in place on Campfield Hill.
  • Between 25 May and 12 June, three-way lights will be in place at the junction of Pydar Street and Union Street.
  • Between 4 March and 8 April, Old Bridge Street will be closed to northeast bound traffic from the junction of the car park to the junction with St Clement Street.

A noteworthy aspect of the traffic management plan involves the closure of Old Bridge Street to northeast-bound traffic for over a month, starting from 4th March. This closure is designed to facilitate the smooth execution of the upgrade works while allowing traffic to enter from specific junctions and directing car park exits through designated streets.

The cooperation between Wales & West Utilities and Cornwall Council, coupled with the comprehensive planning of traffic management, exemplifies a well-orchestrated effort to enhance Truro’s infrastructure with minimal inconvenience to the public. Residents and businesses can look forward to improved gas services upon the completion of this project, marking a significant investment in the future of Truro’s energy supply and infrastructure resilience.
