Flares Aren’t Fireworks: Wadebridge Distress Flare Triggers Emergency Response
Authorities Warn Against Misusing Safety Equipment
Last night, a red distress flare ignited an emergency response in the centre of Wadebridge after multiple 999 calls reported the incident. HM Coastguard, Polzeath, and Padstow rescue teams, along with Devon & Cornwall Police and the Rock RNLI Lifeboat, carried out extensive searches in the area, including the river and Camel Trail.
Distress Flare Found in Park
After an intensive search, responders located a discarded distress flare in a local park. The use of the flare in a non-emergency situation has been condemned as reckless and dangerous.
Polzeath Coastguard emphasised that setting off distress flares outside of emergencies is a criminal offence. Leaving a used or expired flare on the ground is also illegal.
Flares Are Not Fireworks
“Flares are not fireworks and are for distress situations only and should not be used for any other reason,” the Coastguard stated. They also highlighted the importance of disposing of flares appropriately if they are expired or damaged.

Public Action Praised
Members of the public who called 999 after seeing the flare were commended for their quick thinking. The Coastguard encouraged anyone who sees a distress flare to report it immediately, even if they are unsure whether it signals a real emergency.
“Even if you are uncertain whether you have seen a distress flare, we will send our teams to investigate. If you think someone is in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard,” the team added.
Details of the incident have been passed to Devon & Cornwall Police for further investigation.
Do not risk lives—use distress flares responsibly and report emergencies to 999.
