Wadebridge Unveils Bold New Vision: Street Markets, Wellness Tourism, and More
Wadebridge Town Council has unveiled an ambitious new vision to revitalise the town, following a comprehensive six-month consultation process.
The report, commissioned by the council and conducted by Rise Associates, outlines a series of recommendations aimed at improving various aspects of town life, from market days to riverside development and enhanced support for independent businesses.
Community Engagement and Key Findings
Between January and May, consultants engaged with over 1,250 residents, including 500 pupils from Wadebridge School. The findings indicated a higher level of pride among adult residents compared to younger people. This disparity prompted recommendations for more facilities aimed at younger residents to foster a stronger sense of belonging.
A significant public meeting earlier this year featured retail expert and former Iceland CEO Bill Grimsey, who emphasised the importance of stronger partnerships to support local businesses. This suggestion was well-received by councillor Robin Moorcroft, who highlighted the community’s commitment to implementing improvements.
Early Actions and Future Plans
Among the recommendations, a street market has already been introduced and is set to become a regular feature on the last Wednesday of every month along Molesworth Street and beyond. This initiative aims to boost local commerce and provide a vibrant community hub.
Councillor Ian Welch, Mayor of Wadebridge, expressed his enthusiasm for the report, which was funded by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund. “We all care about the future of our town, and it is great to get new ideas from a different perspective on how we can make Wadebridge even better,” Ian said.
Wadebridge: A Hub for Wellness Tourism
The report also suggests positioning Wadebridge as a prime destination for wellness and wellbeing tourism. Matt Baker from Rise Associates highlighted the town’s potential, citing its proximity to the Camel Trail and a wealth of sports clubs and leisure facilities. “Wadebridge has the opportunity to become a leader in wellness tourism and a sports haven where everyone can cycle, run, play sports and hike to your heart’s content,” Matt explained.
Next Steps
The report will be discussed further at a public presentation and debate on the future of Wadebridge, scheduled for 26th June at 6.30pm at Wadebridge Camels Rugby Club. This event will offer residents another opportunity to contribute to the town’s evolving vision and ensure that the recommendations reflect the community’s desires and needs.
Wadebridge’s new vision promises exciting changes and a collaborative approach to making the town an even better place to live, work, and visit.
