New Waste Service Launches in North East Cornwall: What You Need to Know

Published On: 4 November 2024Last Updated: 4 November 2024By

Residents in north east Cornwall will see changes to their rubbish collection as a new service aimed at increasing recycling and reducing waste launches today, 4th November 2024. This marks the latest phase in Cornwall Council’s efforts to promote a more sustainable environment.

Weekly Food Waste Collections Begin

The updated service includes weekly food waste collections, a major shift for the area. Households have received silver kitchen caddies to separate food waste from other rubbish, and green outdoor collection caddies for placing food waste out for pick-up.

Cornwall Council has emphasised that these changes will contribute to lowering the carbon footprint and building a more sustainable community. As part of the new system, residents will continue to have fortnightly recycling collections in the current recycling bags and box.

Fortnightly Rubbish Collections Introduced

Residents in Bodmin, Bude, Launceston, Padstow, Wadebridge, Camelford, Kilkhampton, and surrounding areas will also see a switch to fortnightly rubbish collections. These collections will utilise either a wheelie bin or a reusable protective sack, depending on the property type.

Those living in properties with shared or communal bin stores will be supplied with collection bins tailored to their arrangements.

New Collection Schedules

Most residents in north east Cornwall will experience a change in their collection days. It is essential for households to check their new schedules, which have been sent via post. Additionally, details can be verified online at www.cornwall.gov.uk/myarea.

Preparing for the Rollout

Cornwall Council has provided guidance to help residents adapt to the new system. Households can find tips for recycling food waste at www.cornwall.gov.uk/foodrecycling. For any questions, the council directs residents to www.cornwall.gov.uk/wastechanges.

Cllr Carol Mould, Cornwall’s portfolio holder for neighbourhoods, expressed appreciation for the community’s efforts: “Our new food waste, recycling and rubbish service will help residents in north east Cornwall increase their recycling, reduce their waste and recycle their food waste for the first time. All this helps to lower our carbon footprint, lessen our impact on the planet and contribute to a sustainable Cornwall. ”

Next Steps for Mid West Cornwall

This rollout follows the implementation of the service earlier this year in mid, south east, and west Cornwall. Residents in mid west Cornwall will start receiving new bins this month, with the service changes set to begin in March 2025. Until then, they will continue with their current collection service.
