06/01/2026 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Snow & Ice

Icy Roads This Morning Could Catch Travellers Out

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice issued by the Met Office is in place until 11:00 today, Tuesday 6th January, with the potential to cause disruption during the morning.

The warning has been active since 12:00 on Monday 5th January and covers parts of Wales and western areas of England, with conditions expected to affect travel early today.

What to Expect This Morning

The Met Office says scattered rain, sleet and snow showers may move east during Tuesday morning. While not all areas will be affected, some small snow accumulations are possible.

The greatest chance of snow is across higher ground in Wales, where between 1 and 3 cm could build up in a few places. Elsewhere, accumulations are expected to be mostly negligible, although up to 1 cm is possible in one or two locations.

With temperatures widely below freezing, icy surfaces are likely.

Travel Disruption Possible

The warning highlights the risk of some roads and railways being affected, with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

There is also a risk of some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, particularly on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths where icy patches are expected.

Safety Advice from the Met Office

The Met Office advises people to plan ahead if travelling, allow extra time for journeys and check for road closures or delays to public transport.

Those heading out on foot are encouraged to use pavements along main roads, which are more likely to be less slippery. Cyclists are advised to stick to main roads that may have been treated.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions before setting off and to consider carrying essentials in their vehicle in case of delays. These include warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper or de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.

People are also reminded that weather warnings can change, and the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest local forecasts.

Why the Warning Is Yellow

The Met Office says the yellow warning reflects a medium likelihood of the conditions occurring, but with a low overall impact.
