08/01/2026 – Weather in Cornwall – Amber Weather Warning For Wind

Published On: 8 January 2026Last Updated: 8 January 2026By

An amber weather warning for wind has been issued for parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, with Storm Goretti expected to bring a short but potentially dangerous spell of very strong winds on Thursday evening.

The warning from the Met Office is in place from 5pm until 11pm today, Thursday 8th January, with a separate yellow warning covering a longer period from 3pm today until 6am on Friday.

What is expected this evening

Storm Goretti may bring exceptionally strong north westerly winds for a time this evening, particularly across the Isles of Scilly and parts of Cornwall.

In exposed coastal and hilltop areas, peak gusts of 80 to 90mph are possible, although this will depend on the exact track of the storm. If the low pressure system tracks further south, the risk of the strongest winds would reduce.

More widely, gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely, with 60 to 70mph along exposed coasts and hills. Winds are expected to ease gradually during the early hours of Friday.

The system has been named by Meteo France, with the strongest winds most likely to affect northern France.

Risks and possible disruption

The Met Office warns that flying debris is likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life. There is a risk of damage to buildings, including tiles being blown from roofs.

Travel disruption is also possible, with longer journey times and cancellations likely across road, rail, air and ferry services. Some roads and bridges may close.

Power cuts are possible, which could affect other services such as mobile phone coverage.

Along the coast, there is a risk of injuries and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and nearby properties.

Safety advice

Driving in these conditions can be dangerous. Those who must travel are advised to drive slowly, be cautious around high sided vehicles, and give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries and buses more room than usual.

People are urged to stay indoors as much as possible during high winds. Anyone going outside should avoid sheltering close to buildings and trees. Loose items around homes should be secured in advance, including bins, garden furniture, trampolines, sheds and fences.

Coastal walkers are advised to be aware of large waves, which can sweep people off their feet even from the shore. Extra care should be taken near cliffs, with dogs kept on a lead. In an emergency, people should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

The Met Office also advises preparing for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs and other essential items.

Why the warning level matters

The amber warning has been issued due to a medium likelihood and medium impact, meaning there is a real risk of significant disruption and potential danger.

The yellow warning, which runs for longer, reflects a low likelihood but medium impact, with disruption still possible as Storm Goretti passes through.

People are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather forecast for their area and follow advice from emergency services and local authorities as conditions can change quickly.
