15/09/2025 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Wind

Published On: 15 September 2025Last Updated: 15 September 2025By

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, in place from 20:00 on Sunday 14th September until 18:00 today, Monday 15th September.

The alert covers Cornwall and warns of strong and gusty winds likely to cause disruption to travel and interruptions to power supplies.

What to Expect

The Met Office has said:

  • “Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.”

  • “It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.”

  • “Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.”

  • “Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.”

  • “Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.”

How Strong Will the Winds Be?

According to the warning, strong west or southwesterly winds began arriving across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales on Sunday evening, spreading more widely inland during Monday morning.

Gusts of 45-55 mph are expected inland, with 60-70 mph possible along exposed coasts and hills. Winds will slowly ease from the west later this afternoon and into Monday evening.

Safety Advice

The Met Office has also given advice to help people prepare:

  • “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.”

  • “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”

  • “If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

  • “Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

Why Yellow?

The Met Office explained that this yellow warning has “a medium likelihood and a low impact.”
