Could Snow Hit Cornwall Today? Met Office Issues Fresh Warning

A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place from 12pm today until 11.59pm tomorrow, with the Met Office advising that wintry showers could bring disruption across parts of Cornwall.

What the Warning Says

The Met Office states that wintry showers will move southwards through Wednesday and Thursday, affecting southwest Wales as well as Devon and Cornwall. These showers are expected to push well inland on brisk northerly winds.

Some areas may see snow settling, especially overnight or further inland. While some places might see little or no lying snow, the areas most exposed to frequent showers could see between 2 and 5 cm. A few isolated spots, mainly on hills above 200 metres, could see up to 10 cm.

Gusty winds and hail may also accompany the showers. Where snow falls and later refreezes, there is a risk of ice forming.

Potential Disruption

According to the Met Office, there is:

  • A small chance that untreated pavements and cycle paths become impassable

  • A slight chance that bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times

  • A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

  • A slight chance of power cuts that could also affect mobile phone coverage

The warning is classed as yellow due to a very low likelihood but medium impact.

Travel and Safety Advice

The Met Office advises people to plan ahead during snowy and icy weather. Drivers are encouraged to plan routes carefully, check for delays or closures, allow more time before setting off and ensure their vehicle is prepared. Essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper or de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger are recommended.

For those walking or cycling, leaving at least five minutes earlier is suggested to help reduce the risk of slips or falls. Pavements and roads along main routes are more likely to have been treated and could be less slippery.

People are also encouraged to prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essentials.

The Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest forecast for your area, as weather warnings can change.
