20/11/2025 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Snow & Ice
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place from 12pm on Wednesday 19th November to 11.59pm today, as wintry showers continue to push across parts of Cornwall.
The Met Office says the showers will move southwards through Wednesday and Thursday and may lead to some disruption.
What to Expect
According to the warning, there is a small chance that untreated pavements and cycle paths could become impassable. There is also a slight chance that bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times.
The Met Office adds there is a small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. There is also a slight chance of power cuts, which could affect other services such as mobile phone coverage.
Further Detail from the Met Office
Wintry showers are expected to move across southwest Wales and parts of Devon and Cornwall, travelling inland on brisk northerly winds.
Some snow accumulations are possible, particularly overnight or away from the immediate windward coast. While some areas may see little or no lying snow, places with more frequent showers could see 2 to 5 cm, with up to 10 cm possible in isolated spots. Higher ground above 200 metres in Pembrokeshire and west Carmarthenshire is most likely to see the greater totals.
Gusty winds and hail may accompany some of the showers. Where snow partially thaws and refreezes overnight, there is also a risk of ice.
Advice on Staying Safe
The Met Office warns that snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. It advises planning routes carefully, checking for delays or closures, and amending travel plans if needed. Drivers are encouraged to leave more time to prepare their vehicles before setting off and to pack essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, blankets, a torch, de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.
For anyone heading out on foot, the advice is to leave home at least five minutes earlier than usual to reduce the risk of slips and falls. Pavements along main roads are more likely to be less slippery. Cyclists are encouraged to stick to main roads that are more likely to have been treated.
If travelling by bus or train, checking timetables and amending plans if necessary can help avoid delays. The warning also notes that preparing for potential power cuts can make them easier to cope with, suggesting gathering torches, batteries and a mobile power pack.
The Met Office also reminds people to stay up to date with forecasts, as weather warnings can change.
Why Yellow?
The Met Office states the warning has a very low likelihood but a medium impact.
