Storm Benjamin Hits Cornwall: Met Office Issues Yellow Warnings for Wind and Rain

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for Cornwall today, Thursday 23rd October, as Storm Benjamin moves across the south of the UK, bringing heavy rain and strong northwesterly winds.

Yellow Warning for Wind

The yellow weather warning for wind is in place from 06:00 to 15:00 today, with the Met Office warning that “strong northwesterly winds could cause some disruption on Thursday.”

A spell of strong winds is expected to develop across parts of southwest England and western Wales this morning, with gusts reaching 40-45 mph widely and up to 44-55 mph along exposed coasts and headlands.

The Met Office has said:
“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.”
It’s also “likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.”

Bus and train services may be affected, with some journeys taking longer. There could also be “some isolated short term loss of power and other services,” and high-sided vehicles are advised to take extra care on exposed routes and bridges.

Advice from the Met Office

The Met Office has urged people to check road conditions and travel timetables before setting off and to prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.

They have also issued a coastal safety warning:
“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

The public are reminded that weather warnings can change quickly, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.

This yellow warning has been classified as having a medium likelihood and a low impact.

Yellow Warning for Rain

A separate yellow weather warning for rain is also in place from 00:00 to 18:00 today, with the Met Office warning of “a risk of heavy rain for southern and eastern parts of Britain associated with Storm Benjamin.”

The storm is expected to bring 20-30 mm of rain quite widely, with 30-50 mm possible in places, and a chance of even higher totals over North Devon and Cornwall.

The Met Office said the rain will arrive in southwestern Britain later Wednesday before spreading northeast, followed by frequent heavy showers in western areas as the main rainband clears on Thursday.

Storm Benjamin will also bring gales across southern Britain during the day, initially affecting south-eastern coasts.

Further Impacts and Safety Advice

The Met Office warns of “spray and flooding on roads leading to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents,” and that some public transport services could face delays.

A few homes and businesses may experience flooding.

The public is encouraged to check if their property could be at risk of flooding and to consider preparing a flood plan and emergency kit.

This warning also carries a medium likelihood and low impact classification.
