Heavy Rain Warning Issued for Cornwall as Flood Risk Grows

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for Cornwall, covering the period from 12:00 today, Thursday 29th January, through to 03:00 tomorrow morning.

The warning has been put in place as further rain is expected from Thursday afternoon into early Friday, with the potential to cause travel disruption and worsen flooding in some areas.

What’s Expected

The Met Office says a band of rain will arrive across Cornwall on Thursday afternoon, moving north east through the evening before clearing during early Friday. While the rain is only expected to last a few hours in any one location, it is likely to be heavy at times.

Rainfall totals of 10 to 15 mm are expected fairly widely, with some locations, most likely in the south of the area, seeing between 20 and 25 mm.

The impact of this rain is expected to be higher than usual due to already saturated ground and ongoing flooding following Storm Chandra.

Possible Impacts

The Met Office warns that spray and flooding on roads could lead to longer journey times. Bus and train services may also be affected, with delays possible.

Flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is considered likely.

Advice for Residents and Travellers

People are advised to check whether their property could be at risk of flooding and, if so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before travelling, while public transport users should keep an eye on bus and train timetables and amend travel plans if necessary.

The Met Office also advises staying up to date with the latest forecasts, as weather warnings can change quickly.

Why the Warning Is Yellow

The warning is classed as yellow because it has a high likelihood but a low impact.

Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Set to Hit the South West Today

A changeable spell of weather is set to affect South West England from today, Thursday 29th January, through to Monday 2nd February, with rain and strengthening winds becoming a key feature.

Thursday: Rain Moves In Later

Today starts off dry for many, although some mist and murk is expected during the morning. This should lift to allow brighter spells, but showers are likely to continue in western areas.

During the afternoon, a band of heavy rain is forecast to edge in from the west, reaching all parts of the region later in the day. Winds will also pick up as the rain arrives. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 10°C.

Tonight: Wet and Blustery

The wet weather continues into the evening, with a locally heavy band of rain pushing across the region. Conditions are expected to turn blustery. Overnight, clearer spells and showers will follow from the west. Temperatures are forecast to dip to around 4°C.

Friday: Unsettled With Risk of Gales

Friday begins with sunny spells and scattered showers. However, further heavy rain and strong winds are expected to arrive during the morning. There is a risk of coastal gales, with a very unsettled afternoon forecast across the South West. Maximum temperatures will again be close to 10°C.

Weekend and Early Next Week Outlook

From Saturday through to Monday, conditions are set to remain changeable, with rain or showers at times. There is some good news, as longer drier periods are expected to become more likely into the new week, along with some bright spells. Temperatures are forecast to stay close to average, although it will remain breezy.
