Heavy Rain Warning for Cornwall: Flooding Possible Today

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for Cornwall, with further rainfall expected to cause disruption and possible flooding.

The warning from the Met Office is in place from 9am today, Friday 30th January, until 6am tomorrow, Saturday 31st January.

What’s expected

Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, are forecast to arrive across Cornwall this morning before moving north eastwards across other parts of south west England during the afternoon. Showers are then expected through Friday evening and overnight into Saturday morning.

Rainfall totals of 10 to 20mm are likely in many areas, with up to 30mm possible over the moors and parts of west Cornwall. With the ground already saturated, this could lead to flooding and disruption. Strong winds are also expected in places.

Possible impacts

The Met Office says bus and train services are likely to be affected, with longer journey times expected. Spray and flooding on roads could also cause delays, and flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is possible.

Advice for residents and travellers

People are advised to check whether their property could be at risk of flooding and, if so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

Anyone travelling is encouraged to check road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and to amend travel plans if necessary. The Met Office also advises staying up to date with the latest forecasts, as weather warnings can change quickly.

Why the warning is yellow

The yellow warning has been issued due to a medium likelihood of the weather occurring and a low impact overall, although localised disruption remains possible.

Heavy Rain and Coastal Gales Set to Hit Cornwall Today

Parts of Cornwall are set for a mixed and increasingly unsettled spell of weather, with heavy rain, strong winds and a risk of localised flooding over the next few days.

Today: Bright Start Before Heavy Rain

Friday 30th January will begin fairly bright for many, with sunny intervals in the morning. Conditions will quickly change, however, with wet weather arriving in Cornwall first before spreading eastwards through the afternoon.

Periods of heavy rain are expected, bringing a risk of localised flooding. Winds will also strengthen as the day goes on, with a chance of coastal gales developing by the evening. Temperatures will reach a maximum of 10°C.

Tonight: Wet, Windy and Mild

This evening and overnight will remain wet and windy for many areas, with further spells of heavy rain. There will be occasional drier and clearer periods later on, particularly overnight. It will stay mild, with temperatures dropping to around 6°C, and coastal gales remain possible.

Saturday: Improving Later in the Day

Saturday will start cloudy, with spells of rain continuing through the morning. Conditions are expected to improve as the day progresses, becoming drier by the afternoon with only scattered showers. Brighter spells are most likely in the west, and winds will gradually ease. The maximum temperature is forecast to be 9°C.

Outlook: Sunday to Tuesday

Sunday is expected to be drier overall, although some areas may see low cloud and lingering fog. For most, sunshine should break through later.

Looking ahead to early next week, the weather is set to turn increasingly unsettled again, with further wet and windy conditions at times from Monday into Tuesday.
