Flooding Risk Tomorrow as Heavy Rain Warning Issued
A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued by the Met Office, covering the period from 5:00am to 11:59pm tomorrow, Thursday 5th February.
The warning highlights the risk of surface water flooding in places, alongside disruption to travel and services.
What the Weather Warning Means
Periods of rain and heavy showers are expected to move in from the south overnight tonight and into Thursday. The rain is forecast to become heavy and persistent in some areas during Thursday morning.
While there may be a brief break for many later in the day, with some heavy showers still around, a further spell of organised and at times heavy rain is then expected to arrive again from the south, affecting the same areas.
By the end of Thursday, between 10mm and 20mm of rain is likely to have fallen fairly widely. A few locations could see more than 30mm. With ground conditions already widely saturated, low impact surface water flooding is considered probable.
Travel and Services Could Be Affected
The Met Office says spray and flooding on roads are likely, which could make journey times longer. Bus and train services may also be affected, with delays possible.
There is also a chance of brief interruptions to power supplies and other services. Flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is possible.
Advice for Residents
People are being advised to check whether their property could be at risk of flooding and, if so, to consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
Those travelling are encouraged to check road conditions before setting off, or to look at bus and train timetables and adjust travel plans if needed.
The Met Office also notes that people tend to cope better with power cuts when they have prepared in advance. Suggested preparations include having torches, spare batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items ready.
Weather warnings can change quickly, and the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest forecast for your area.
Why the Warning Is Yellow
The warning has been issued with a medium likelihood and a low impact rating, meaning disruption is possible but not expected to be widespread.
Residents are advised to remain aware of conditions throughout the day as the situation develops.
