Met Office Issues Yellow Warning as Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Hit Cornwall

Warning in Place Until Wednesday Evening

The Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning for Cornwall, now covering both rain and wind from 12pm today (Tuesday 11th November) until 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday 12th November).

Heavy rain and strong southerly winds are expected to cause difficult driving conditions and possible flooding across parts of the county.

Flooding of a few homes and businesses
Spray and large waves affecting coastal routes, sea fronts and communities
Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges
Disruption to bus and train services
Longer journey times due to spray and flooding on roads

Outbreaks of light rain on Tuesday morning are expected to become heavier and more persistent through the afternoon, with gusts exceeding gale force possible along south-facing coasts and over hills.

While conditions may ease slightly on Tuesday evening, further pulses of heavy rain could continue overnight and throughout Wednesday as the weather system slows down.

Rainfall totals of 20-40mm are expected fairly widely, with up to 60-80mm possible on south-facing slopes of the moors. With already saturated ground, flooding in a few spots is possible.

The Met Office added that driving conditions could be difficult, particularly during the Tuesday evening commute, with a greater chance of delays and accidents due to surface water.

Rain will swiftly spread northwards, heavy and persistent, especially over higher ground. Turning brighter in the east later, with some late afternoon sunshine possible. Mild, but breezy along the coasts. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Remaining unsettled with further periods of rain, these heavy and persistent for some, interspersed with drier, clearer intervals. Staying breezy, and feeling colder with temperatures returning to average by Friday.
