Met Office Issues Yellow Warning for Rain and Wind Across Cornwall Tomorrow
A yellow weather warning for rain and wind has been issued by the Met Office, covering parts of southwest England, including Cornwall, and south Wales.
The warning is in place from 02:00 on Friday 23rd January until 09:00 on Saturday 24th January.
What’s expected
Periods of heavy rain and strong winds are likely to cause flooding and disruption in some areas.
The Met Office says there is a risk of short term loss of power and other services, along with delays to road, rail, air and ferry travel. Some bus and train services may be affected, with journeys taking longer than usual.
Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities are expected to be impacted by spray and large waves. A few homes and businesses could be flooded, with spray and flooding also possible on roads.
Heavy rain on saturated ground
Storm Ingrid, named by the Portuguese national weather service IPMA, is expected to bring spells of heavy rain and strong winds through Friday, before conditions ease on Saturday morning.
An initial band of rain early on Friday could bring 10 to 20mm of rain in just a few hours, falling onto already saturated ground. After a drier spell, further bands of locally heavy rain and showers are expected to move north during the afternoon, evening and overnight.
By Saturday morning, a further 15 to 20mm of rain is expected across much of the region, with totals of 30 to 40mm possible in some places. Given how wet the ground already is, flooding is considered likely in places.
Strong winds and coastal gales
The second spell of rain will be accompanied by strong winds and coastal gales, with very large waves expected along the coast.
Wind gusts of 45 to 50mph are forecast inland, with up to 60mph near the coast. Winds are expected to peak during Friday evening, then gradually ease overnight and into Saturday morning.
Advice for residents and travellers
People are being advised to check whether their property could be at risk of flooding and to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit if needed.
Those travelling are encouraged to check road conditions or bus and train timetables in advance and to amend plans if necessary.
The Met Office also advises preparing for possible power cuts by having torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items ready.
Anyone near the coast is urged to take care during stormy conditions. Large breaking waves can be dangerous even from the shore. People walking near cliffs are advised to know their route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Why the warning is yellow
The Met Office says the yellow warning reflects a high likelihood of the weather occurring but with a low overall impact. Weather warnings can change quickly, and people are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecast for their area.
