Cornwall Reptile & Amphibian Group Reports Frog and Toad Spawning Across the UK

Published On: 28 January 2024Last Updated: 28 January 2024By

The Cornwall Reptile & Amphibian Group (CRAG) has recently reported the onset of frog and toad spawning across the UK, marking the start of an important phase in the lifecycle of these amphibians. CRAG is actively encouraging the public to participate in tracking and reporting these occurrences to better understand amphibian behaviours in their natural environment.

CRAG has provided key identifiers to help distinguish between frog and toad spawn. Frog spawn is typically found in clumps, whereas toad spawn appears more string-like. This distinction is crucial for accurate data collection and understanding of each species’ breeding patterns.

The group has noted a few sightings of frog spawn through social media interactions and is keen on receiving more reports. To facilitate this, CRAG urges anyone who has spotted frog or toad spawn to submit their sightings to the Record Pool at www.recordpool.org.uk. This initiative is part of a broader effort to map the locations of amphibian spawn and to gain insights into how native amphibians are adapting to their environments.

Additionally, CRAG invites the public to share any images of the spawn by tagging the facebook group. This visual documentation can assist in enhancing the accuracy of the data collected and contribute to the understanding of amphibian distribution and habitat use.

This effort by CRAG not only aids in ecological research but also engages the public in wildlife observation and conservation, highlighting the importance of community involvement in understanding and protecting the natural world.
