Discover the Intricacies of Gull Identification with CBWPS’s Exclusive Workshops
Cornwall’s dedicated bird enthusiasts are in for a treat as the Cornwall Bird Watching and Preservation Society (CBWPS) announces a series of exclusive field classes aimed at demystifying the complexities of gull identification. Under the expert tutelage of Martin Elliott, one of the foremost gull experts, participants will have the chance to deepen their understanding of these often-misunderstood birds.
Titled “What’s That Gull? – A Guided Identification Field Class”, these guided identification workshops are scheduled to take place at either Hayle Estuary or St Clements, Mousehole. The final choice of venue will be decided on the day, taking into account the prevailing weather conditions and tides. The workshops are spread over four dates: 24th and 25th February, 29th February, and 9th March 2024, each running from 12 to 3 pm.
Martin Elliott, who has dedicated thousands of hours to observing gulls and has a knack for spotting rarities, will lead the workshops. His extensive experience and knowledge promise to offer participants a deep dive into the world of gulls, suitable for both beginners and seasoned birders alike. The small group size, limited to six participants per workshop, ensures an intimate learning environment where attendees can fully leverage Elliott’s expertise.
The cost of the workshops is set at £30.00 for Cornwall Birds members and £35.00 for non-members, with an additional option to extend the session at £5.00 per hour for those who wish to further their learning. Pre-booking is essential to secure a spot, with interested parties encouraged to contact Martin Elliott directly for payment details and to avoid disappointment.
Attendees are advised to come prepared with suitable warm clothing and footwear, along with a notebook, binoculars, and a telescope to make the most out of the field experience. The exact parking and meeting points will be communicated in accordance with the chosen venue, and there’s even the cosy fallback option of retreating to a pub or cafe should the weather turn sour.
This event represents a unique opportunity for anyone looking to refine their gull identification skills, courtesy of CBWPS and Martin Elliott’s expertise. Don’t miss out on this chance to connect with nature and enhance your birdwatching prowess.
