Humpback Whale Sightings Soar Along Cornish Coast
Humpback whales, known for their impressive size of up to 18 meters and remarkable migratory patterns, are increasingly being sighted in UK waters. This winter, Cornwall has recorded at least 30 sightings of these magnificent mammals, a significant increase compared to previous years.
According to the Trust, the increase in sightings around Cornwall is part of a broader trend observed over the past five years. This surge in the number of humpback whales visiting UK seas is seen as a positive indicator of their growing population, which is currently estimated to be around 140,000 worldwide.
These whales, renowned for their long-distance migrations that can extend up to 16,000 km, are found across the world’s oceans. They typically travel to cooler waters to feed on fish and krill and then migrate to tropical seas for breeding. With a lifespan ranging between 50 and 75 years, humpback whales are a symbol of the ocean’s vast and dynamic ecosystem.
In the seas around the UK, humpback whales are commonly spotted either alone or in pairs. Experts believe that the shallow waters around Cornwall are particularly attractive to these whales for feeding, especially for juveniles or non-breeding adults. The abundance of fish shoals in the area provides an ideal feeding ground for these whales during the winter months.
The Cornwall Wildlife Trust encourages people to keep an eye on the horizon when visiting the coast during this season. Spotting a humpback whale is an awe-inspiring experience, offering a unique connection with one of the ocean’s most iconic inhabitants. The increase in sightings is not only a treat for wildlife enthusiasts but also a reminder of the importance of marine conservation efforts.
