A Year of Unprecedented Engagement
2023 saw SRT deliver an unprecedented 740 activities involving over 29,000 participants, including 245 events across the UK and 80 internationally. The efforts ranged from talks and workshops to extensive field engagements and exhibitions. The report highlights the crucial contribution of the volunteers who managed to give seals a voice and propel the charity’s message across various platforms, reaching a broad demographic that spans all age groups.
Volunteer Empowerment and Public Education
A significant aspect of the Trust’s success this year has been the empowerment and active involvement of their volunteers. These dedicated individuals stepped beyond their comfort zones to become ambassadors for seal conservation. Through engaging with the public, particularly during specific events like Operation Seabird, volunteers have played a critical role in educating the community about seal protection and conservation.
Strategic Partnerships and Impactful Events
In collaboration with the Field Studies Council, SRT expanded their online Ecoskills courses, furthering education on marine conservation. The year also featured impactful community events, including British Wildlife Days and various national celebrations where the presence of SRT raised awareness and fostered community support for seal conservation.
Success Stories from the Field
One of the highlight stories from 2023 involved a two-week-long effort by 35 volunteers who dedicated 232 hours to ensure the safety of a seal pup at Pentire, which successfully weaned off its mother in a public display of the Trust’s effective conservation strategies. The Trust also continued its impactful Photo ID Project, processing over 100,000 photos and identifying numerous seals, contributing valuable data to marine wildlife research.
Legislative Advocacy and Future Goals
SRT has also been proactive in advocacy, contributing to policy discussions and striving to include seal disturbances as offences under existing wildlife protection laws. Their participation in the Wildlife and Countryside LINK as full members underscores their commitment to shaping effective marine conservation policies.
