Wildlife Makes a Comeback at 'Dubbers' – Rare Species Spotted in Restored Mine

"Excellent for the wildlife and to save green spaces for walkers. Showcases Cornwall's mining history."

"Amazing! Can't wait to go and explore it!"

These were just some of the reactions from the community event held by Imerys last week in Nanpean, where they shared the latest progress on their mine restoration project at Dubbers, near Roche in mid-Cornwall.

100,000 Trees and a New Home for Wildlife

The project has already seen the planting of 100,000 trees, made possible by a grant from DEFRA and the Woodland Trust. Biodiversity has been boosted with the introduction of 'rescued' bees, new bird boxes and wildflower seeding across the meadows.

These efforts have transformed the once barren kaolin pit into a thriving landscape, now home to a wide range of birds, mammals and amphibians. Among the sightings are rarer species such as the Little Plover.

Plans for More Pathways

Imerys confirmed they will be announcing plans soon to open up more permissive pathways, giving the public greater access to the restored land so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Restoration manager Sean Simpson and local ecologist Bob Bosisto were present at the community event, answering questions and sharing expert insight. Feedback gathered from attendees will now help shape the ongoing restoration of the Scarcewater site near Fraddon.

Have Your Say

There is still time for people to share their thoughts on the project. Imerys has asked anyone interested to fill in their online feedback form here.
