Soil Map of Cornwall Revealed at Cornwall College University Centre, based at the Eden Project
A comprehensive soil map of the Lizard in Cornwall has been unveiled at the Cornwall College University Centre, based at the Eden Project, in a ceremony honouring the late soil scientist, Steve Staines. This map represents the first and only extensive soil study of Cornwall, highlighting Steve’s dedication and expertise in the field.
A Tribute to a Pioneering Scientist
The University Centre will display the soil map along with a personal tribute to Steve Staines, the pioneering scientist who dedicated his life to studying local minerals. His work aimed to understand and promote conservation and biodiversity for generations to come. Dr Jennie Jordan, head of the Eden Project-based campus, expressed the institution’s honour in displaying Steve’s remarkable map, which was presented by his grandchildren.
“Working in the 1970s to produce the most comprehensive soil map of Cornwall, Steve’s work remains a keystone study for land managers, ecologists, conservationists, and planners to this day,” said Jennie. “This map will take centre-stage at Growing Point and will inspire our students and the wider community who visit our state-of-the-art laboratories for years to come.”
Continuing a Legacy
Friends and family of Steve Staines expressed deep gratitude to the University Centre, which will continue his work and legacy. The event was organised by Tim Harrod, a fellow soil scientist who worked closely with Steve, highlighting the close-knit community of experts dedicated to the field of soil science.
