Local MP Faces Backlash After Voting to Scrap Winter Fuel Allowance

Thousands of Mid-Cornwall residents could be affected

In a controversial decision, Mid-Cornwall MP Noah Law has voted in favour of scrapping the Winter Fuel Allowance, which provides up to £300 to vulnerable residents. The move has sparked concern, with Cornwall Councillor for Newquay Central & Pentire, Louis Gardner, speaking out on the issue.

The allowance, which is set to be cut, currently benefits around 20,000 residents in the Mid-Cornwall area, many of whom are elderly or vulnerable. The decision comes at a time when many are already grappling with the cost of living crisis.

Councillor Speaks Out for Affected Residents

Louis Gardner, who represents hundreds of residents in Newquay, expressed his concerns about the vote on social media. He has been contacted by a number of constituents worried about what the scrapping of the Winter Fuel Allowance will mean for them this winter. Louis has since written to Noah Law to ask him to explain his vote.

“Thousands of elderly and vulnerable people locally will be impacted by this decision,” Louis said in his Facebook post. He encouraged residents who are affected to reach out to him for support.

MP Salary Raises Questions

What has particularly raised eyebrows is the fact that MPs, who earn over £92,000 a year, can still claim heating costs for their offices and London accommodation through taxpayers’ money. This stark contrast between the MPs’ financial privileges and the removal of crucial support for residents has fuelled criticism of the decision.

Many are now waiting to hear how Noah Law will respond to Louis Gardner’s request for an explanation.

If you are affected by this decision and have concerns, Louis Gardner has said you can contact him via Facebook page here or by email cllr.louis.gardner@cornwall.gov.uk.
