Cornish Pirates Add Two Talented Young Forwards to Squad
The Cornish Pirates have bolstered their squad with the signing of two young Cornish forwards for the remainder of the season. Both players bring a wealth of local rugby experience and are set to contribute to the team’s campaign.
Barnaby Elderkin: Rising Back Row Talent
Nineteen-year-old back row forward Barnaby Elderkin joins the Pirates, following in the footsteps of his brother Joe Elderkin, who plays as a centre for the club. Barnaby, a product of Truro School and Truro College, has an impressive rugby pedigree, having attended England camps at under 17 and under 18 levels.
In addition to representing Truro and Redruth, Barnaby has been part of the Exeter Chiefs Academy and played for the Chiefs against the Royal Navy. Earlier this season, he featured for the Pirates in two friendly matches.
Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Gavin Cattle praised Barnaby’s development, stating:
“Barnaby has done a couple of pre-seasons with us to and from college, and we have seen him develop into a fine young man and as a fine young rugby player. Now deciding to concentrate more on his rugby, it is a logical option, and at this moment in time we are really delighted to welcome him into the squad.”
Matt Pritchard: Experienced Hooker Joins the Ranks
The second addition is 22-year-old hooker Matt Pritchard, who signs from Redruth. Matt started his rugby journey with Helston and has also played for Truro and Falmouth. Like Barnaby, Matt was educated at Truro School and Truro College and has been part of the Exeter Chiefs Academy.
A standout moment in Matt’s career came when he was part of the Cornwall under 20s team that won the Jason Leonard Cup. He has also represented South West England Counties and gained valuable experience playing National League rugby with Redruth.
Gavin Cattle highlighted Matt’s abilities, noting:
“Watching Matt for a couple of seasons, he is someone squat and powerful in stature. He has good minutes playing National League rugby with Redruth, and his set piece play is also good, as he is in the contact area. It’s another welcome opportunity for a local Cornish boy, which is particularly pleasing.”
Local Talent Strengthens the Pirates’ Future
Both signings reflect the Pirates’ commitment to developing and nurturing Cornish talent. With Barnaby and Matt joining the squad, fans can look forward to seeing more local players making their mark on the professional stage.
