Emergency Callout in the Early Hours

The St Austell Coastguard team was called out in the early hours of Sunday morning to assist with an emergency in Fowey Harbour. A vessel had issued a Mayday distress call after taking on water, prompting an immediate response.

Fowey RNLI lifeboat was on the scene, providing assistance to the stricken vessel. Once alongside, arrangements were swiftly made with Fowey Harbour to lift the boat out of the water.

Salvage Pumps Kept Vessel Afloat

While waiting for the lift, the crew worked to keep the vessel afloat using salvage pumps, ensuring it remained stable until it could be safely removed from the water.

Once the boat was in safe hands for lifting, the St Austell Coastguard team stood down, hopefully managing to grab a couple of hours of rest before resuming their usual Sunday routines.

A spokesperson for the team praised the coordinated effort, stating:

“A good team effort ensured a great outcome.”

Emergency Advice for Mariners

This incident highlights the importance of calling 999 for the coastguard in any emergency at sea. Mariners can also hail for help on VHF Channel 16 for immediate assistance.
