Fowey RNLI wants lifesavers who never have to go to sea

Not everyone who saves lives at sea gets there by lifeboat. A lot of the work happens on dry land, in conversations and at events, long before anyone gets into trouble in the water.

Fowey RNLI is looking for volunteers in the Fowey and St Austell Bay area to join the RNLI Water Safety Volunteer team.

The station is recruiting for Water Safety Advisers and Water Safety Officers, and wants to hear from people with a range of water activity backgrounds.

What the water safety team does

Fowey RNLI says water safety messaging has a real impact in saving lives. Volunteers on the team play an important part in RNLI Lifesaving Operations by sharing vital water safety messages, supporting or running events, and helping to educate and equip water users from all spheres to enjoy the sea safely.

According to the RNLI’s volunteer listing, the team develops Water Safety Lifesaving Plans, delivers interventions and works with partners to improve the public’s understanding of water safety. The aim is to cut the number of preventable deaths and incidents in local coastal and inland waterway environments.

What a Water Safety Adviser does

Advisers go out into the community to deliver RNLI water safety advice, contributing to the local Water Safety Lifesaving Plan.

Part of the role is spotting local risks and working with partners to deliver targeted interventions.

Who they are looking for

The RNLI wants people with a passion for encouraging others to be safe on, in and around the water, along with good communication and people skills.

Some experience of public speaking helps. But the listing is just as open to people who want to build their skills and confidence in that area.

You might already be involved with the RNLI or be completely new to it. All applications are welcome and training will be provided.

Successful applicants will need to go through vetting and reference checks before starting.
