New Blooms for Newquay: Barrowfields Beds Planted for Wildlife Boost
Green space transformation aims to support pollinators and thrive in coastal conditions
Volunteers from Newquay in Bloom have been busy at the Barrowfields, planting new flower beds as part of the Urban Green Shoots project. The second Wednesday planting session saw great progress, helped along by a well-earned cuppa and cake.
With reference sheets guiding the process, participants could see how the planting scheme is designed to be insect-friendly, supporting local biodiversity as it grows.
Hardy Plants for Coastal Conditions
Cornwall Councillors Louis Gardner (Newquay Central & Pentire) and Olly Monk (Newquay Trenance) joined the effort, along with Cormac and Cornwall Council, to help get the beds planted.
Louis explained that this work is part of a wider effort to enhance green spaces in towns across Cornwall, funded through the Shared Prosperity Fund. The chosen plants have been specifically selected to withstand the coastal environment, with resistance to wind and salt spray.
“When mature, they will not only look and smell great but will be great for pollinators,” he said, acknowledging the hard work behind the project.
With work continuing, the Barrowfields is set to become a more welcoming and resilient green space for Newquay.
