Tregothnan Open Garden Weekend Raises £65K for The Women’s Centre Cornwall

More than 4,000 people stepped through Tregothnan’s private gates during the last weekend of April, helping to raise an impressive £65,000 for The Women’s Centre Cornwall.

The exclusive Open Garden Weekend took place on 26th and 27th April and offered visitors a once-a-year chance to explore what’s often called Cornwall’s finest botanical garden. This year, all funds went to support The Women’s Centre Cornwall, a charity helping women and girls affected by domestic and sexual abuse.

A Rare Look Behind the Gates

Tregothnan, near Truro, is the historic home of the Boscawen family and the first place in the UK to grow tea commercially. Each year, the private estate opens its gates to support a chosen charity.

This year’s event featured ancient camellias, mountainous magnolias and the world’s biggest rhododendrons, along with a food court set up in the historic stable yard.

Funds to Tackle Real Challenges

Jackie May, CEO of The Women’s Centre Cornwall, said:
“We are absolutely delighted and deeply grateful to have been chosen as the main charity for Tregothnan’s Garden Opening Weekend. With this extraordinary gift we have the opportunity to meet some significant challenges in supporting women and girls and we anticipate kickstarting an exciting new initiative.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to the Tregothnan team for selecting The Women’s Centre Cornwall for this special honour, as well everyone who attended and supported the event. It was a joy to work alongside such passionate and committed people.”

Jonathon Jones, managing director of trading at Tregothnan, added:
“It is always a delight to open our gates and see the estate thronged with visitors – especially when it is in aid of such a deserving charity. The Women’s Centre Cornwall has an incredible impact on the lives of so many and we are thrilled to be able to lend a hand by helping to raise vital funds. Thank you to everyone who visited and contributed.”

Charity of the Year for West Country Women

The Women’s Centre Cornwall has also been chosen as Charity of the Year by West Country Women, a group that champions women across the region.

A special fundraising sports day will take place on Thursday 22nd May at Bovey Castle in Devon. Activities include archery, rifle shooting, a balloon squeeze challenge, a fancy dress 100 metre dash and a twist on the classic egg and spoon race.
